Google's data centre in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, represents one of the UK's most significant recent investments in digital infrastructure.
The facility forms part of Google's wider £5 billion UK investment programme. More than 250 companies were involved in building the facility, with the majority reportedly being local businesses.
Google has said its investment is projected to create 8,250 jobs annually at UK businesses. Importantly, this figure relates to the wider economic impact of Google's investment rather than 8,250 permanent employees working inside the data centre.
The project demonstrates the variety of employment opportunities connected to data-centre development. Construction and engineering companies are required during the build, while operational facilities require specialist engineering, technical, security, maintenance and management expertise.
Google's Waltham Cross development also highlights the growing importance of Hertfordshire as a data-centre employment market, particularly as AI and cloud computing continue to increase demand for high-capacity infrastructure.
